Company Description

Fortrans provides pH Control System and Biodegradable Cleaning Chemical needs

Fortrans Inc. manufactures earth-friendly chemicals and pH Control Systems. Fortrans was founded in 1996 as a manufacturer of environmentally safe, low toxicity specialty cleaning chemicals.

Fortrans' new CR-650 Concrete Remover, which, in combination with Fortrans' lines of pH control systems for process water, aids concrete producers in achieving their goals for green technology.

Its new CR-650 Concrete Remover is a super-concentrate, which makes it a very cost-effective product for the concrete industry. This product biodegrades to carbon dioxide and water and does not contain any hydrochloric or phosphoric acid, so users do not have to worry about treating their
water to neutralize chlorine or remove phosphorous before they discharge pH adjusted water.

The other half of the combo is the line of pH control systems that concrete producers use to lower pH of their process water and lower the total suspended solids of this water to under the EPA limit of 30 mg/l. The process allows the owner to discharge or recycle water at low cost and meet the permit requirements for discharge of process water.

"When you combine high-performance chemicals that do not require waste treatment with an inexpensive way for ready mix concrete producers to adjust pH and reduce solids in their process water, you get a combination that is good for
us and good for our customers," says Bob Cooke, owner of Fortrans Inc.

Fortrans' systems do not use sulfuric acid to lower pH, so operational and maintenance costs are up to 60% less than acid systems. These systems are also much safer than comparable acid-based systems.

Fortrans was the first company to employ this type of pH control technology for concrete producers and has a good knowledge base to share with the industry.

Fortrans' pH Control Systems are well-tested with over 200 units installed throughout the United States, some of which are over eight years old and are operated daily.

"At Fortrans we are in the business to help the concrete industry keep its trucks exceptionally presentable to the public and to manage process water in a responsible manner," concluded Cooke.

Biodegradable Product Information

If a chemical product is biodegradable it's OK to use, right? Maybe not! All biodegradable means is that the chemical consumes oxygen and breaks down in the environment. In fact, most everything is biodegradable. What is needed are chemicals that readily break down without forming toxic compounds or adding nutrients to groundwater or waterways.

For instance, the chlorine contained in hydrochloric acid reacts with common organics found in groundwater or rivers and forms such toxic compounds as Methyl Chloroform and Trihalomethanes (a carcinogen).

This is why cities can no longer release treated waste water with free chlorine. They must neutralize the chlorine with sulfur dioxide to protect aquatic life and downstream water treatment plants. Another treatment problem is phosphorus. Many cleaners sold to the ready mixed concrete industry contain high levels of phosphoric acid.

Fortrans Inc. has brought to the marketplace cleaning products that do not contain chlorine compounds or phosphorus.

Concrete contains alkalis with sodium, magnesium and calcium compounds. When a phosphoric acid solution is used in the cleaning operation, the reaction forms weak soluble phosphates which cannot be removed by settling basins. The phosphates must be removed by a chemical process called flocculation and physically hauled away as sludge. If the phosphates are not removed they can add a high level of nutrients to the waterways and contribute to problems such as algae blooms which causes oxygen depletion and may cause fish kills. Most cities in the USA must now remove phosphate before returning treated water to rivers and streams.

The answer to these water quality problems is to use cleaning products that do not contain chlorine compounds or phosphorus. This is a major reason Fortrans Inc. has brought to the marketplace cleaning products that do not contain these types of raw materials. Mortarman Concrete Remover and the truck & cab wash Safe Soap II with Wax do not contain chlorine, phosphorus or other raw materials which could form toxic compounds or furnish nutrients to the environment.
